Beeston & District Local History Society
In the summer of 1972 a meeting was advertised inviting anyone who was interested in local history to come along to Beeston College. The result was that the nine people who attended formed a committee. The first meeting was held on the 20th of September and took the form of a discussion about the aims and objectives to give members a chance to state what they wanted from the society. It was to be for the benefit of the people of Beeston, Chilwell, Attenborough, Toton, Bramcote and Stapleford. By the October meeting we had 47 members, and membership increased until we became, and still remain, one of the largest local history societies in Nottinghamshire.
The Society now attracts a large audience to each of its regular monthly meetings, where topics on both local and more general history are presented by a variety of speakers. Visits are also arranged to places of historic interest and an ever expanding archive provides local material for research by members and for public display from time to time. The Society welcomes offers of local material for these archives.
The President of the Society is Alan Clayton
The management of the Society is through a committee elected each October including:
Chairman - Jill Oakland
Treasurer - Ray Howard
Archivist - Gill Morral
